SUBJECT: English 123 “Contact Person” for

Dear Prospective Contact Person,

Will you be able to serve as a “contact person” for the above student for Fall Semester 2003? As part of my English 123—College Research Paper, this student is to schedule to see the Contact Person during her/his regular office hours three times during this semester, for about 15 minutes at each appointment. If you will serve as Contact Person, the student will arrange these brief meetings.

The purpose of English 123 is to train a student to conduct research and to write a documented research paper based on that research. This work is much more profitable—and interesting—if the research is in the student’s chosen profession (which is usually, but not always, directly related to the major). That’s where you come in: as “contact Person,” you are in a position to give suggestions to the student as to areas and concentration in research, journals to read (and to subscribe to), and to other persons working in the student’s career. Also, many students really don’t know any professors in their majors—not even their advisors. Therefore, this is an opportunity for a student to become acquainted with a professional—you.

I know that you are very busy with teaching, research, service, advisees, and so on, and I know that meeting with this student may be an extra load; hence, the student is to see you during your regular office hours, for 15 minutes, not more than three times. I know that you will give more time if you have it and if the student needs it.

Should you have questions or comments about my approach to this class, won’t you drop me a note (eMail is Prof@ProfW.com) or phone call (1-2942)? Thank you for your help.
